Ballada de Gitanes

A Carnival dance with two centuries of history

The Ballada de Gitanes is a popular celebration from Vallès Oriental, part of the Carnival festivities. In Llinars del Vallès, it has become an emblematic and cherished event, combining music, dance, and celebration in a communal and festive atmosphere, and continuing a cultural expression deeply rooted in the region.

The tradition of the Ball de Gitanes in Llinars is documented from 1818 and remained active until 1957. After a break of several years, it was revived in 1992 and has been celebrated every Carnival Sunday since. The event has grown in prominence and adapted to modern times, moving from Plaça de la Vila to Plaça Caritg and, finally, to Plaça dels Països Catalans, where it now draws crowds and dancers.

Colla Giola has been instrumental in reviving and consolidating the dance. With their dedication and enthusiasm, they coordinate the artistic and logistical aspects, while passing the tradition on to new generations and keeping this legacy of popular culture alive. Thanks to their efforts, the Ballada de Gitanes has become a landmark in the municipality and a symbol of local identity.

Over the years, the event has featured unique elements that enrich the celebration, such as the character Os Pedrer, music by the Principal Primera orchestra, and parallel activities like exhibitions and special commemorations, including the 2022 event celebrating Colla Giola’s 30th anniversary.
