Church of Santa Maria del Prat

A Baroque temple with Romanesque roots

The Church of Santa Maria del Prat, located in the old town of Llinars del Vallès, is one of the most historic religious buildings in the municipality. First documented in 1040, it was donated by Bishop Guislabert to the chapter of the Cathedral of Barcelona. The current temple, of Baroque design, began to be built in 1680 on the old Romanesque church, although the works were not completed until 1781, as indicated by the inscription on the facade.

Despite the extensive renovation, some traces of the original construction are still preserved, such as elements of the first body of the bell tower and remains of Romanesque windows, which have been heavily modified. The three-body bell tower stands out for its structure: the second body, with pointed brick arches for the bells, and the third, crowned with battlements and with the clock faces.

The façade, symmetrical and of great simplicity, is crowned by a cross and framed by a granite perimeter. It stands out for its 2.5-metre central rose window with an iron and copper star, and for the hand-tiled porch, which adds warmth and character. The octagonal apse and the ribbed vault complete a serene and collected interior.

The main altarpiece, gilded and presided over by the image of the Virgin Mary —work of Frederic Marès— is one of the most valued elements of the ensemble. Restored in 2008, it has recovered its original splendor, and continues to be a spiritual and heritage reference for the town.
