The Can Casas Library is much more than a reading space: it is a meeting point open to all citizens and a cultural engine of the municipality. Located in the center of Llinars del Vallès, it offers loan of books and audiovisual materials, internet access and digital resources, promoting continuous learning, social inclusion and equal opportunities. In addition, it has a stable program of activities for all ages: children’s and family workshops, storytelling, reading clubs, exhibitions, digital training and artistic proposals that strengthen community ties and stimulate a taste for culture and reading.
The origins of the library in Llinars date back to the Second Republic, with the project of a Popular Library that could never be completed due to lack of resources and the outbreak of the Civil War. Those unfinished walls remained for decades as a symbol of a frustrated aspiration, until they were demolished in 1981, when the Old Library Square was inaugurated. In between, in 1956, the first library service was opened in Plaça Damià Mateu, promoted by the “Caja de Pensiones para la Vejez y de Ahorros”.
The current library building also has its own history: built in 1923 as a textile factory for the Casas family, over time it has hosted various uses – from a vocational training school and secondary school to a multi-purpose room for social and sports activities. Renovation work to convert it into a library began in 2000 and the official inauguration took place in 2003. Since 2018, the facility has officially been named Biblioteca Can Casas, in recognition of its past and the legacy of the promoter family.
Visiting the Can Casas Library is, at the same time, a way to get closer to books and to connect with the living history of a people that has made knowledge and culture a collective commitment.
