Miranda

The Mateu tower, popularly known as La Miranda, was one of the most emblematic and beloved buildings in Llinars del Vallès, closely linked to the collective memory of the town. This modernist building, located on the estate of local businessman Damià Mateu, was built in 1906 on the corner of Anselm Clavé Street and the Giola stream. Its authorship is related to the renowned Antoni Gaudí or to his disciple Francesc Berenguer, as it presented characteristics typical of both artists. Oral tradition explains that Gaudí visited Llinars several times to supervise its construction, and that La Miranda was a gift from Mateu to his wife so that she could have a space to meet with her friends.

The building stood out for its circular plan, sinuous silhouette and height that made it unique in the town. It consisted of a ground floor with a garage and three upper floors, crowned by a bell-shaped dome covered in trencadís, a characteristic element of modernism. It was a second family residence until the Civil War, at which time it suffered some damage due to a very close explosion on January 29, 1939, which caused numerous victims and significant destruction in the municipality. Although La Miranda survived this episode, the family home was badly damaged and the family had to abandon the property.

Over the years, the building deteriorated and the village children began to use the space as a playground. Finally, the pressure of the intense construction fever of the sixties caused La Miranda to be demolished in 1962, leaving a void that is still remembered today as a great heritage loss for Llinars.
